Tragic Rockfall Claims 13 Lives on Udaipur-Kilar Road

Continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district has thrown life into disarray and caused immense destruction. Severe landslides in various parts of the district have taken a grim turn this July 2026. In the most heartbreaking incident, 13 people, including a six-month-old infant, tragically lost their lives when massive rocks fell from a mountain onto a moving vehicle on the Udaipur-Kilar road.

Eyewitnesses reported that the vehicle was en route to Pangi Valley when a large section of the hillside suddenly collapsed onto the road. The vehicle was completely crushed by the heavy boulders, leaving no chance for its occupants to react or escape. Several residents of Pangi Valley were among the deceased, sending shockwaves across the entire state.

Traffic Snarls and Road Closures Due to Torrential Rain

The relentless downpour has also led to the obstruction of several crucial district roads, bringing traffic to a complete standstill. A significant landslide near Paniyala in the Bhattiyat area has deposited a massive quantity of debris and rocks on the road, impeding movement. Similarly, the Lahdu-Sihunta road near Khadmuch in the Bharmour region is also closed due to a landslide.

These road closures have severed connectivity for many villages to the district headquarters. Consequently, locals are facing severe difficulties in accessing essential supplies and services. The district administration has directed the Public Works Department, police, and disaster management teams to restore the roads as soon as possible, given the gravity of the situation.

Rescue Efforts Hampered by Persistent Rain; Red Alert Issued

The district administration has initiated a war footing operation to clear the debris from the roads with the assistance of JCB machines. However, the incessant rainfall is proving to be a major impediment to relief and rescue operations. The administration has clarified that these routes can only be declared fully safe once the weather normalizes.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for several districts of Himachal Pradesh, including Chamba. The department has forecast the possibility of extreme heavy rainfall, landslides, rockfalls, and flash floods in the coming days. The weather department has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise extreme caution, especially on mountainous routes.

The tragedy in Chamba underscores the escalating threat of landslides in Himalayan regions during the monsoon season. Geologists and experts believe that excessive and continuous rainfall weakens the soil on the mountains, leading to large-scale landslide events. The administration has urged tourists and local residents to refrain from traveling on risky routes until the weather fully stabilizes to prevent any untoward incidents.
