Centre Clears ₹5,532-Crore Projects Under Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme

India aims to boost self-reliance in core electronic components; Tamil Nadu emerges as key hub

In a major step toward deepening India’s electronics manufacturing ecosystem, the government on Monday (October 27) approved the first batch of projects under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), clearing seven proposals worth ₹5,532 crore in investment and a projected output of ₹44,406 crore.

The move marks a strategic shift in India’s electronics industry — from assembling finished goods to building high-value core components such as multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs), copper laminates, and camera modules.

Tamil Nadu Leads with Five Projects

Among the approved firms are Kaynes Circuits India Pvt. Ltd., SRF Ltd., Syrma Strategic Electronics Pvt. Ltd., and Ascent Circuits Pvt. Ltd. Tamil Nadu accounted for five of the seven projects, consolidating its position as a key manufacturing hub under India’s electronics growth roadmap.

Together, these projects are expected to create over 5,000 direct jobs in the first phase and significantly reduce the country’s import dependence on critical components.

Industry Response Exceeds Expectations

Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) said the ECMS received 249 applications, representing a total investment commitment of ₹1.15 lakh crore — nearly double the scheme’s initial target of ₹59,350 crore.

These proposals collectively project a production value of ₹10.34 lakh crore and an employment potential of 1.41 lakh, far surpassing initial estimates of ₹4.57 lakh crore and 91,600 jobs, respectively.

‘Laying the Foundation of Every Device’

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the approved projects would help India meet a substantial share of domestic demand for key components.

“The components being approved today — multi-layer PCBs, copper laminates, camera modules, and polypropylene film — are the foundation of every electronic device,” Vaishnaw said. “With these plants, India will meet 20% of its domestic demand for high-density PCBs, 15% for camera modules, and 100% for copper laminates.”

The ECMS is a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to make India a global hub for electronics design, manufacturing, and supply chain resilience, complementing existing initiatives such as the PLI scheme for large-scale electronics manufacturing and the Semicon India program.
