The CBI has initiated a probe into the suspicious death of a youth in police custody in Bilaspur, following a Supreme Court directive.

CBI Initiates Probe into Custodial Death
Bilaspur, August 15, 2026 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has commenced its investigation into the suspicious death of a youth while in police custody in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. A four-member CBI team arrived in Bilaspur specifically to delve into the matter, acting on a Supreme Court directive.
Upon arrival, the team began scrutinizing crucial documents and police records related to the case. Their initial visit was to the Civil Lines Police Station, where they secured the case diary, records of police actions, and all necessary documents pertaining to the magisterial inquiry.
Detention and Allegations of Cruelty
Subsequently, the investigation team visited the Central Jail. A thorough examination of records concerning the youth's detention and his condition in jail was conducted. The CBI's primary objective is to meticulously piece together the entire sequence of events from the moment of his police custody to his transfer to jail.
The family of the deceased youth has leveled serious allegations against the police. They claim the youth was illegally detained at the Sipat Police Station for approximately 36 hours. It is alleged that during this period, he was subjected to brutal physical assault by the police, leading to a severe deterioration of his health.
According to the family, despite the youth's life-threatening condition, he was not provided with timely and adequate medical facilities. Later, the police arrested him in a case related to the Excise Act and sent him to judicial custody.
Deteriorating Health and Death in Custody
Information suggests that the youth's health worsened significantly immediately after his transfer to jail. Given his critical condition, he was rushed to the hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital.
Following the youth's death, his family lodged a complaint against the police, demanding a fair and transparent investigation. They explicitly allege that the death was not natural but was a result of the alleged assault and torture in police custody, which critically worsened his health to a fatal extent.
Supreme Court Mandates CBI Investigation
Considering the gravity and sensitivity of the case, and under the judicial process and a clear order from the Supreme Court, the entire investigation has been handed over to the CBI. The four-member CBI team is now engaged in collecting all documentary evidence related to the incident to bring the truth to light.
The CBI's investigation is thoroughly examining all critical stages: the process of taking the youth into custody, the time spent at the police station, dates and reports of his medical examinations, actions taken under the Excise Act, the decision to send him to jail, and ultimately, his death during treatment in the hospital.
Unraveling the Truth
The agency is also attempting to ascertain what happened to the youth during his custody, whether he was indeed beaten, when his medical examinations were conducted, and what his health condition was just before his transfer to jail.
Currently, the CBI team has begun collecting the necessary documents and is proceeding with the investigation. It is anticipated that further decisive action will be determined based on the evidence gathered and the detailed investigation report submitted by the CBI. This investigation holds the potential to reveal the police's role and the actual cause of the youth's death, offering hope for justice.
