McDonald on Green's Balancing Act

Andrew McDonald, Australia's head coach, acknowledges the intense pressure on Cameron Green from both his IPL franchise and the national team.

"There's huge expectation within the IPL, and there's huge expectation with any all-rounder that shapes an Australian team," McDonald said.

Green was acquired by KKR for a staggering Rs 25.20 crore, making him the most expensive overseas buy ever in the IPL.

McDonald suggests unrealistic expectations are often placed on all-rounders, expecting them to excel in both batting and bowling.

 

"It's almost like they want them to average 45 with the bat and average less than 30 with the ball. And there's been very few that do that. I'm sure that his career will trend upwards," McDonald said.

Ajinkya Rahane's remarks about Green not bowling due to injury in the IPL match against Mumbai Indians sparked controversy.

Cricket Australia clarified that KKR is aware of Green's back niggle, requiring 10-12 days of no bowling.

All-Format Potential Still in Sight

Despite fitness concerns, McDonald believes Green remains an all-format player prospect for Australia, especially in Tests.

He mentioned that with Usman Khawaja's retirement, Green could fill the No. 5 position.

"But you've got (Beau) Webster and Green that potentially can play in the same team, so that gives us incredible flexibility. But I think he's (Green) good enough," the coach stated.

McDonald added that Green needs to work on aspects of his game, similar to any other player.
