Cambodia's HIV Milestone

Cambodia has successfully achieved its 95-95-95 HIV treatment targets, marking a significant step towards eliminating AIDS as a public health threat. The announcement was made by Minister of Health Chheang Ra.

The targets, reached in 2023, mean that 95% of people living with HIV know their status. Furthermore, 95% of those aware are receiving antiretroviral treatment, and 95% of those on treatment have achieved viral suppression.

During a meeting with Patricia Ongpin, UNAIDS Country Director for Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia, Minister Chheang Ra highlighted the effectiveness of the nation's efforts.

"Achieving the 95-95-95 targets is a clear testament to the progress and effectiveness of Cambodia's National AIDS Program," he said. "It shows that Cambodia is firmly on track towards ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030."

The minister emphasized Cambodia's dedication to integrating HIV prevention, testing, and treatment into its health system. Expansion of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis and self-testing services is also planned.

UNAIDS Validation and Future Steps

Ongpin congratulated Cambodia on its remarkable progress. UNAIDS will formally validate and recognize the country's achievement of the 95-95-95 targets in accordance with international standards.

The Ministry of Health reported that in 2023 there were approximately 76,000 people living with HIV/AIDS in Cambodia. The report also noted nearly 700 AIDS-related deaths and about 1,200 new HIV infections recorded last year.

Cambodia will continue to boost funding sustainability for AIDS programs to ensure long-term success.
