Singapore Court Orders Jail Term

Byju Raveendran, the founder of the beleaguered edtech firm BYJU'S, faces a six-month jail sentence from a Singapore court. This follows a contempt case related to non-compliance with court directives issued since April 2024.

The court's decision mandates that Raveendran surrender to authorities and pay legal expenses amounting to S$90,000 (approximately $70,500).

He is also required to furnish documents proving his ownership of Beeaar Investco Pte, which holds shares in an affiliated entity.

Raveendran's Response

Raveendran expressed his disappointment with the court's decision and its portrayal. He believes it creates a misleading impression of him, especially during ongoing settlement talks.

"I am disappointed that the recent Singapore court matter has been pursued and reported in a manner that creates a misleading impression about me, especially at a time when all key parties have almost concluded the settlement discussions."

He emphasizes that he has been prioritizing resolution over confrontation in recent months.

Settlement Discussions and QIA's Role

Raveendran highlighted that settlement discussions are underway with lenders like GLAS Trust and QIA, and other stakeholders. He claims that an agreement has been reached in principle, with only minor issues remaining.

He believes QIA's decision to continue pressing the matter is an unnecessary pressure tactic during this sensitive phase.

"Against this backdrop, the decision by QIA to continue pressing this matter appears to be an unnecessary pressure tactic at a sensitive stage of the settlement process."

Denial of Wrongdoing

Raveendran asserts that he has always acted in good faith and in the best interests of BYJU'S. He maintains that neither he nor other founders personally received any of the disputed funds.

He states that the funds were used for legitimate business purposes. Raveendran aims to support a constructive resolution.

Even so, he stated that he cannot allow a false and one-sided narrative to go uncontested.

What to Watch Next

The next steps involve Raveendran potentially appealing the Singapore court's decision and continuing negotiations with QIA and other stakeholders to finalize the settlement. The outcome will significantly impact the future of BYJU'S and Raveendran's role within the company.
