BMC Chief Sets 15-Day Deadline to Clear Construction Waste in Bhopal

In a decisive push to tackle urban waste and improve sanitation, Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Sanskriti Jain, who also serves as the newly appointed Executive Director Member of the Bhopal Smart City Board, has issued a 15-day deadline to remove all construction and demolition (C&D) waste from across the city.

The directive came during a Board of Directors meeting of Bhopal Smart City Limited, held Friday at the Smart City office in Govindpura. This marked Commissioner Jain’s first meeting in her new role on the Board.

Immediate Action on Waste and Strict Enforcement Ordered

During the review, Jain instructed officials to lift waste immediately after road sweeping to prevent any visible accumulation of garbage. She stressed that city sanitation systems must be tightened and violators penalized to uphold cleanliness standards.

Among the key directives issued were:

• Instant waste removal post-sweeping to keep streets visibly clean

• Spot fines and strict action against illegal dumping of C&D waste and public littering

• Sanitation workers (Safai Mitras) must report in full uniform

• Garbage vehicles to adhere strictly to predefined routes and schedules

• Ward-wise audits to identify defunct vehicles, drivers, and helpers

• Night cleaning operations to be made more effective

• Litter bins to be cleaned during night hours

• Geo-tagging of violators, with photo-based notices issued for dumping offenses

• Penalties and removal charges to be calculated based on volume of waste

Real-Time Monitoring and Smart Surveillance

Commissioner Jain also visited the Integrated Control and Command Center (ICCC) to evaluate the real-time monitoring of garbage collection vehicles. She reviewed operational data and vehicle movement to assess compliance and efficiency.

Officials were directed to track violations digitally, geo-tag sites of illegal dumping, and use the ICCC surveillance system to gather evidence for enforcement.

A Renewed Focus on Urban Sanitation

The directives reflect a zero-tolerance approach to waste mismanagement and a renewed focus on smart, tech-enabled urban sanitation. Jain emphasized the need for increased accountability across departments, from ground-level sanitation workers to supervisory staff.

Environmental advocates and civic groups have welcomed the move, calling it a step in the right direction toward cleaner and more livable urban spaces in Bhopal.

The next few weeks will be critical in determining the effectiveness of these measures as BMC races against the clock to meet the 15-day deadline.
