BJP Slams New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani Over Note on Umar Khalid, Calls It Interference in India’s Internal Affairs

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday accused New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani of interfering in India’s internal matters after he wrote a note referring to jailed activist Umar Khalid, triggering a sharp political response from the ruling party.

Addressing the issue on January 2, 2025, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said India would not tolerate commentary from foreign political figures on its domestic legal processes. He questioned the New York Mayor’s authority to comment on matters that are before Indian courts and governed by Indian law.

BJP’s Response: Sovereignty and Judiciary Emphasised

Mr. Bhatia said that any attempt to question India’s internal affairs undermines the country’s sovereignty. He asserted that if India’s sovereignty is challenged, citizens would stand united under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The BJP spokesperson also stressed that the Indian judicial system operates independently and enjoys the confidence of the public. According to him, matters involving individuals accused under Indian law must be addressed through the country’s legal institutions, not through statements from overseas political leaders.

Background: Umar Khalid Case

Umar Khalid, a former student activist, has been in judicial custody in connection with cases related to the 2020 Delhi violence. The cases are currently under consideration in Indian courts, with proceedings ongoing. Indian authorities have consistently maintained that due process is being followed.

The BJP’s reaction comes amid periodic international commentary on high-profile legal cases in India, which the government and ruling party have repeatedly described as unwarranted external interference.

Broader Context: India’s Stance on Foreign Commentary

India has, in recent years, taken a firm position against what it views as external commentary on its internal political and legal matters. Government officials and ruling party leaders have often reiterated that India’s democratic institutions, including its judiciary, are capable of addressing such issues without outside involvement.

Political analysts note that such responses are aimed not only at defending sovereignty but also at reinforcing the government’s narrative of institutional strength and independence.
