BJP Announces Candidates for Assembly Bypolls Across Four States and J&K

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday unveiled its candidates for upcoming Assembly bypolls in Odisha, Telangana, Jharkhand, and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), fielding a mix of repeat contenders and relatives of deceased incumbents.

Jharkhand: Ghatsila Bypoll

For Ghatsila Assembly seat in Jharkhand, the BJP re-nominated Babulal Soren, son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren. The seat fell vacant after the death of Ramdas Soren of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). In the 2024 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Ramdas Soren had defeated Babulal by 22,446 votes. Ghatsila is reserved for Scheduled Tribes and lies in East Singhbhum district.

Jammu & Kashmir: Budgam and Nagrota

In J&K, the BJP fielded Aga Syed Mohsin for Budgam in the Kashmir Valley and Devyani Rana for Nagrota in the Jammu division.

  • Devyani Rana is the daughter of late legislator Devender Singh Rana and niece of Union Minister Jitendra Singh. She expressed confidence in continuing her father’s legacy, stating:

“I intend to take forward the vision of Rana sahib for Nagrota.”

  • Aga Syed Mohsin, from a prominent Shia clerical family, represents the Budgam constituency, which has a significant Shia voter base. He is the son of the late Aga Syed Mustafa Moosavi.

Odisha: Nuapada Bypoll

In Odisha, the BJP nominated Jay Dholakia for Nuapada Assembly seat, which became vacant after the death of Rajendra Dholakia, a senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and Jay’s father. Jay Dholakia joined the BJP just last week. BJP is expected to be supported locally by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi during nomination filing.

The BJD has announced Snehangini Chhuria, a former minister, as its candidate, while Congress nominated Ghasiram Majhi, a former Independent candidate.

Telangana: Jubilee Hills Bypoll

The BJP nominated Lankala Deepak Reddy for Jubilee Hills, following the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath in June 2025.

Election Schedule

All the bypolls are scheduled for November 11, 2025, alongside the second phase of Bihar Assembly elections. Results for these bypolls will be announced on November 14, alongside Bihar’s results.
