BJP Alleges ₹100 Crore Flood Relief Scam in Malda, Cites CAG Report Submitted to Calcutta High Court

The West Bengal unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday alleged large-scale irregularities in the disbursal of flood relief funds in Malda district, citing a 700-page report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) that has been submitted to the Calcutta High Court.

According to the BJP, the CAG findings point to a potential ₹100 crore scam during the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government’s handling of flood relief under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In a post on X, the BJP claimed the report exposes “systematic financial irregularities” in which genuine flood victims were allegedly denied relief, while funds were routed to ineligible beneficiaries. The party described the alleged irregularities as “organised misuse of public money” and demanded accountability.

Allegations Highlighted by BJP

The BJP claimed the audit report reveals that:

• 6,965 individuals received flood relief multiple times, with payments ranging from two to 42 transactions credited to the same bank accounts

• In Harishchandrapur-2 block, one individual allegedly received relief 42 times

• Around ₹7.5 crore was disbursed for damage to pucca houses, despite the district magistrate reportedly certifying zero damage to such structures

• 108 public representatives and government employees, including alleged TMC-linked individuals, received benefits meant for below-poverty-line households

• Over ₹7 crore was allegedly paid to individuals who never applied for relief

• Official files from block offices were reported missing, raising suspicions of attempts to conceal records

Political Reactions

Targeting the ruling party, the BJP accused the TMC of hypocrisy, alleging that while the government speaks about deprivation, relief funds meant for the poor were misused.

The party termed the alleged irregularities a case of “state-sponsored loot” and said the issue would figure prominently in its campaign ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

As of now, the Trinamool Congress and the West Bengal government have not issued a detailed response to the specific allegations cited by the BJP. The findings mentioned by the BJP are based on its interpretation of the CAG report submitted to the High Court.
