Upper Lake Reaches Full Capacity After Heavy Rains

Due to continuous torrential rains in the capital Bhopal, the historic Upper Lake (Bada Talab) achieved its full capacity on Friday. After the water level reached the Full Tank Level (FTL) of 1666.80 feet, the gates of Bhadbhada Dam, specifically Gate No. 6, were opened for the first time this season to discharge excess water.

As the gates opened, the water flow in the Bhadbhada area intensified, attracting crowds of onlookers to witness the spectacle. The administration had already made necessary preparations in anticipation of the rising water levels and continuous inflow.

Administration Gears Up as Water Levels Rise

Increased surveillance was put in place at Bhadbhada Dam as the water level in the Upper Lake continued to rise. A thorough assessment of the water situation was conducted on Friday evening, followed by traditional rituals and prayers.

Subsequently, a siren was sounded to mark the opening of the dam gates. Present at the gate opening were Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai, the Municipal Commissioner, and other senior officials from the Municipal Corporation and administration.

Officials closely examined the direction of water flow and the current water level of the lake. They issued clear instructions to maintain necessary safety arrangements to handle any potential emergency situation.

Importance of the Lake and Drainage System

The designated Full Tank Level (FTL) for the Upper Lake is 1666.80 feet. Continuous rainfall over the past few days led to a significant increase in water inflow into the lake, reaching this stipulated limit on Friday.

Following this, the excess water was released downstream through Bhadbhada Dam. This water, flowing from Bhadbhada, eventually merges with the Kaliyasot River, forming a crucial part of the region's drainage system.

Alert Issued for Low-Lying Areas

Concurrently with the gate opening, the administration issued directives for heightened vigilance, particularly in low-lying areas and those along the drainage routes. Concerned officials have been instructed to continuously monitor water levels and remain fully prepared to respond promptly to any untoward incident or potential situation.

The water levels of the Upper Lake and Bhadbhada Dam are considered critically important for Bhopal's water supply and the surrounding areas. Consequently, the administration remains on high alert during the monsoon season when water levels rise.

Public Urged to Adhere to Safety Guidelines

The general public is also urged to avoid unnecessary visits to areas with water flow and strictly adhere to the safety instructions issued by the administration. With the opening of the Bhadbhada gates for the first time this season, the active monsoon phase has clearly impacted the water level of Bhopal's Upper Lake.

The administration's keen focus is now directed towards monitoring the continuous inflow of water into the lake and the outflow from Bhadbhada Dam, ensuring the prevention of any inconvenience or emergency.
