Residents Protest Illegal Construction in Residential Areas

In Bhopal's Shivaji Nagar locality, women staged a strong protest against the illegal construction and establishment of shops within residential zones. Undeterred by the rain, they organized a peaceful candle march under the banner of the Shivaji Nagar Residents' Association, urging the administration to halt these commercial activities immediately.

Residents expressed concerns that the opening of shops in residential areas, stemming from the redevelopment of Ravishankar Shukla Market and 5 Number Market, poses a threat to their peace and security. The march was led by regional corporator Yogendra Singh Guddu Chauhan, and included many residents from Machana Colony and 5 Number Market. The procession commenced from Rajiv Gandhi School and concluded at the 5 Number Police Post.

Safety Concerns Raised

Congress leader Vivek Tripathi voiced his apprehension about the safety of schoolchildren due to the presence of these illegal shops. He stated that increased crowds and movement around the shops elevate the risk of accidents for children and obstruct their pathways.

Young social worker Yogesh Sarathe also highlighted worries regarding the safety of women. He noted that the proliferation of shops in Machana Colony has led to an increase in the congregation of anti-social elements, severely impacting the security of women and young girls.

Youth leader Ravi Parmar pointed out that the noise, crowds, and traffic jams resulting from commercial activities are disrupting the daily lives of local residents.

Demand for Immediate Action

Residents have demanded that the administration immediately remove these shops from government residential areas and relocate them to a suitable and organized space. They believe this will not only ensure the safety of children and women but also maintain peace and law and order in residential zones.

Members of the Shivaji Nagar Residents' Association described the candle march as more than just a protest; it was a pledge to protect Bhopal from land mafias. They accused the district administration of remaining a silent spectator while land mafias damage the city's beauty.

They further stated that areas like Bada Talab, Chhota Talab, Kaliyasoat Dam, Kerva, and Chandanpura are already suffering from encroachment, and now there is a plan to destroy residential areas, which they will not allow to succeed.

The committee has urged the administration and the municipal corporation to take effective and non-discriminatory action against illegal construction, encroachment, and land misuse in residential areas, and to preserve the original character of the colonies.
