Bhopal traffic grinds down as citywide construction leaves commuters stranded

Bhopal’s roads are under unprecedented strain as multiple infrastructure projects running at the same time have turned daily commuting into a test of patience. From Arera Colony to Hamidia Road, large stretches are either fully closed, narrowed, or dug up, leading to frequent traffic jams and confusion for motorists.

Commuters say the disruption is no longer limited to select corridors. What was once confined to Metro construction zones has now spread across residential colonies, commercial hubs and arterial roads.

Commuter frustration spills onto the streets

At Vande Mataram Square in Arera Colony, a two-wheeler rider was forced to stop abruptly after encountering a sudden road closure. “It feels as if the entire city has been dug up,” said Ramesh Makhija, echoing a sentiment shared by many residents.

Office-goers, traders and families report that routes which were once reliable now change daily, forcing long detours and adding uncertainty to even short trips.

New Bhopal joins old city in traffic distress

While areas such as Subhash Nagar, Karond and Jinsi have faced prolonged congestion due to Metro construction, residents say new Bhopal localities are now equally affected.

In colonies like Arera Colony, Bawadia Kalan and BHEL residential areas, the Public Works Department has begun converting tar roads into cement concrete roads after the monsoon season. Officials say this is meant to prevent recurring potholes, but the result has been widespread digging and partial closures.

“The roads are either blocked or narrowed everywhere,” said Rampal Singh, an FMCG salesman who travels across the city daily. “Peak hours have become chaotic.”

Residents struggle with sudden diversions

For many, navigating the city has become confusing. Anil Sarathi, a resident of Kolar, described how a routine medical visit turned into a maze.

“The road from Bittan Market to Bhojpur Club was closed. Other entry points into Arera Colony were also blocked. I had no idea which roads I finally took,” he said.

The situation in Arera Colony is worsened by sector gates installed by residents, which are often shut, further restricting through movement.

Traffic police stretched, bottlenecks multiply

Traffic officials admit that snarls have become a daily reality, especially in Bittan Market, Trilanga, Arera Colony and Bawadia Kalan during morning and evening rush hours.

Similar conditions prevail in the old city. According to traffic personnel, construction around Hamidia Road, along with drainage work between Bharat Talkies and Alpana, has created persistent congestion.

“We are managing traffic as best as possible, but smooth movement is difficult,” a traffic police official said, requesting anonymity. He added that engineering and planning constraints cannot be resolved by traffic police alone.

Multiple projects collide on key corridors

Officials pointed out that congestion is not caused by a single project. Ongoing works include:

• Metro construction and underground tunnelling

• Flyover projects

• CC road conversion

• Sewage, drainage and gas pipeline laying

Several critical stretches are affected, including:

• Alpana trisection to Bhopal Railway Station, which remains closed

• Sapna Lodge, DIG Bungalow to Karond

• Sindhi Colony to Qazi Camp and Karond Navibagh

• Entry points to Railway Station Platforms 1 and 6

Additional pressure points include Kali Mandir trisection, Bharat Talkies, Sangam Talkies, Shahjahanabad police station square and Teen Mohra, where reduced road width has slowed traffic in busy commercial zones. In Bairagarh, flyover construction has further narrowed carriageways.

Why it matters now

With office attendance rising and schools fully operational, reduced road space is impacting productivity, fuel costs and emergency response times. Residents fear that without better coordination, congestion could worsen in the coming months.
