Bhopal Plant: Concerns Rise Over Lack of Groundwater Testing Post Clean-Up

Following the removal of chemical waste from the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) plant in Bhopal, environmentalists are expressing deep concern over the state government's apparent lack of interest in conducting groundwater testing. This is the first monsoon season since the clean-up was completed.

Approximately 350 metric tons of chemical waste were transported from the UCC plant to Pithampur for disposal in January 2025.

Environmentalist Dr. S.C. Pandey stated, "Groundwater was tested multiple times around the plant premises before the cleanup. It is extremely unfortunate that the government is now avoiding any kind of testing, while this step is extremely important to restore the trust of the gas tragedy victims and allay their fears."

Environmental engineer Sudhir Paliwal echoed this sentiment, saying, "Groundwater testing is mandatory. Agencies like the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board should take this initiative so that a comparison can be made between the pre-cleanup and post-cleanup results, and the confidence of the local residents can be restored."

However, Brijesh Sharma, Regional Officer of the MP Pollution Control Board, offered a different perspective. "The chemical waste from UCC was packed and safely kept on a three-foot-high platform, which prevented leakage into the soil. The entire waste has been removed and incinerated in Pithampur, so there is no need for groundwater testing now."
