Beyond the Digital Shadow of Childhood, Generation Alpha Must Be Free to Write Its Own Future

For previous generations, childhood was largely a private world. Mistakes, failures, changing interests and unfinished dreams gradually disappeared into memory as children grew into adults. For Generation Alpha, however, childhood is fundamentally different. Their lives are increasingly documented not only in family albums and personal memories but also on servers, applications, search engines, social media platforms, digital classrooms and artificial intelligence systems.
This transformation has created a new phenomenon—the “AI Shadow.” An AI Shadow is not limited to information a child consciously shares online. It may also include conclusions and predictions generated by machines from a child’s digital behaviour: what they like, what subjects they struggle with, what content they consume, how they learn, what questions they ask and even what the system believes they might become in the future.
This raises a profound question: Will the child a machine understands today necessarily remain the same child tomorrow?
In India, digital technology has become an integral part of children’s education, entertainment, communication and social interaction. According to ASER 2024, 89.1 percent of adolescents aged 14–16 reported that a smartphone was available in their household. Around 76 percent primarily used smartphones for social media, while approximately 57 percent used them primarily for educational purposes. These figures illustrate the scale of children’s digital engagement. At the same time, only around 63.5 percent of schools have access to the internet, demonstrating that India’s digital journey remains unequal.
UNICEF-linked U-Report data also indicate that a significant proportion of young people spend several hours online every day. Digital engagement is therefore no longer an occasional part of childhood. It is becoming embedded in everyday life. And now artificial intelligence has entered this environment.
AI can offer enormous benefits to children. An AI tutor can understand a student’s learning pace, identify areas of difficulty and provide explanations tailored to individual needs. One child may struggle with mathematics but excel in languages. Another may learn more effectively through visual material, examples or conversation. AI has the potential to make personalised education more accessible and effective.
UNICEF’s recent work on children and AI also highlights the rapid growth of AI use among young people. Children are increasingly turning to AI for studying, homework, information and, in some cases, personal advice. But here opportunity and risk meet. The same AI that can understand a child better can also create assumptions about that child that the child never consciously expressed.
Imagine a child who repeatedly asks questions about science, makes mistakes in certain areas of mathematics, watches particular kinds of online content and frequently seeks help from a digital tutor. An AI system can combine these activities and identify patterns. It might conclude that the child is naturally inclined towards science, weak in mathematics, interested in a particular subject or suited to a particular learning style.
Today, such conclusions may appear harmless. But what happens if these inferences influence educational opportunities, advertising, recommendations or future algorithmic decisions? Today’s digital profile could become tomorrow’s social identity. That is the greatest danger of the AI Shadow.
The defining characteristic of childhood is change. A ten-year-old who dreams of becoming a cricketer may want to become a scientist at fifteen. A child who struggles with mathematics today may excel in it later. A shy child may eventually become a confident leader. Human society accepts this transformation because we understand that childhood is a period of exploration.
AI systems, however, are designed to identify and remember patterns. If past behaviour is treated as a permanent indicator of future ability, yesterday’s limitations may influence tomorrow’s opportunities. Children therefore need more than a right to digital privacy. They need, in a broader sense, a “right to digitally change.” They should have the freedom to become people whose possibilities were not permanently predicted by a machine during childhood.
The first digital divide was about access—who had a smartphone, computer, internet connection and reliable electricity. The second was about skills—who knew how to use technology effectively. Artificial intelligence is creating a third divide: Who understands AI, and who merely depends upon it?
UNICEF’s analyses indicate that in several countries children are significantly more likely than their parents to report using AI. This creates a new technological gap within families. If parents do not understand which AI tools their children are using, what information those systems collect or how algorithms may process that information, it becomes difficult to provide effective guidance. AI literacy, therefore, must not be restricted to children. Parents, caregivers and teachers also need it.
India has already taken important steps towards protecting children’s personal data. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 provides special safeguards concerning children’s data, including provisions relating to parental consent and restrictions concerning tracking, behavioural monitoring and targeted advertising, subject to applicable legal provisions and rules.
However, AI creates a more complicated challenge. Not every fact about a child is directly disclosed by the child. A machine can infer information from patterns of behaviour. These inferences may relate to learning abilities, interests, habits, preferences, vulnerabilities, emotional responses and possible future directions.
This means future data protection cannot stop at asking, “What did the child disclose?” It must also ask, “What did the machine infer?”
UNICEF’s child-centred approach to AI emphasises the importance of children’s privacy, development, autonomy and rights. India should build on these principles through what can be described as “developmental data minimisation.” Only data genuinely necessary for education, safety or legitimate services should be collected. Data that is no longer required should be securely deleted according to appropriate retention policies.
Most importantly, childhood behaviour should not become a permanent digital profile that follows an individual throughout life. A mistake made by a ten-year-old should not become the identity of a thirty-year-old.
Human society gives children permission to make mistakes. A child gives a wrong answer—we allow another attempt. A child abandons one sport and chooses another—we consider it natural. A child performs poorly in one subject—we do not conclude that they will remain weak forever.
Machines, however, are exceptionally good at remembering patterns. This makes algorithmic forgetting particularly important in the context of children. Where appropriate, digital systems should be designed to move beyond outdated data and outdated conclusions. The principles behind the right to be forgotten can become especially significant when dealing with childhood information.
A child must not become a digital citizen permanently imprisoned by their past.
Another emerging concern is the emotional relationship children may develop with AI. A child who regularly interacts with an AI tutor, chatbot or digital assistant may begin to perceive it as more than a technological tool. It may become a source of advice, reassurance or companionship.
Research into the long-term effects of these relationships is still developing, and conclusions should therefore be approached carefully. Nevertheless, the possible impact on children’s cognitive development, emotional dependence and vulnerability deserves serious attention. AI should support human relationships—not replace them. Parents, teachers, friends and communities remain essential to healthy childhood development.
India needs a genuinely child-centred AI framework, not merely a policy focused on technological adoption. AI literacy should become part of education. Children should learn not only how to use AI but also how it works, why it can make mistakes, what information may be collected and why an AI-generated profile cannot fully represent a human being.
Parents and teachers also need AI literacy. They should receive simple guidance about the tools children use, potential data risks and responsible digital behaviour. Businesses should be transparent about AI systems dealing with children, clearly communicating what data is collected, why it is collected, how long it is retained and what kinds of inferences may be generated.
Indefinite retention of children’s data should be discouraged. Childhood information should not become a lifelong digital file. Algorithmic accountability must also be strengthened. Where AI produces significant conclusions about a child, the basis and potential consequences should be understandable. AI recommendations in education should never automatically become final judgments.
Meaningful human oversight must remain essential. Important decisions concerning children should remain the responsibility of parents, teachers and appropriately trained professionals.
India is among the world’s youngest nations. If Generation Alpha is growing up alongside artificial intelligence, the transformation is not merely technological; it is social and developmental.
The answer is not to keep children away from AI. That would neither be practical nor desirable. The real challenge is to ensure that AI supports children’s development without defining them.
AI may identify a child’s weakness, but it must not turn that weakness into a permanent identity. AI may understand a child’s interests, but it must not determine the limits of their future. AI may help a child learn, but it must never become the author of the child’s dreams.
Most importantly, a child’s past must never become a sentence imposed upon their future.
Generation Alpha may become the first generation whose childhood is remembered more extensively by machines than by human beings. Their questions, preferences, mistakes, curiosity and digital behaviour may leave traces capable of surviving for years.
But the essence of childhood is change.
The child a person is today does not have to be the person they become tomorrow. Therefore, in the age of artificial intelligence, the right to privacy must be accompanied by something equally important: the right to grow beyond one’s old digital identity.
We must build an AI ecosystem that can understand children without turning them into permanent files; learn from them without defining their future; and support their education without taking away their freedom to change.
Before machines learn too much about children, they must learn one fundamental lesson:
A child’s future belongs to the child.
Previous generations grew up with the comfort that childhood could eventually be left behind. Generation Alpha deserves the same freedom—the freedom to grow beyond its childhood.
Because childhood is not a map of an entire life.
Childhood is the beginning of possibilities—not the conclusion.
