A young woman in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district was allegedly forced to elope by a trusted acquaintance, gang-raped in a forest, and left alone overnight. In shock, she jumped into a river the next morning, survived, and is now hospitalised with a fractured spine, police confirmed.

What police say happened

According to officials at the Ghoradongri police outpost, the survivor had been in contact with the main accused over the phone. On the night of January 3, she left home after being persuaded to elope when family members were away.

Police said the man arrived with a companion. After travelling some distance, the companion allegedly left, and the woman was then taken to a forest location where two men assaulted her.

Arrests and legal action

Police have arrested three men in connection with the case:

Shambhu Navde, 25, identified as the main accused

Pankaj Uike, 24, accused of participating in the assault

Rawat Uike, 22, alleged to have accompanied the main accused initially

Officials said the trio was planning to flee to Hyderabad when they were caught. They have been produced before a court and sent to judicial custody, an action authorities underlined as a priority response to violent crime.

Official action: All three accused have been arrested and remanded to jail pending further investigation.

Survivor’s condition

After being left alone through the night, the woman attempted to end her life by jumping into the river early on January 4. She landed in shallow water, survived, and was later taken to hospital by her parents. Police were informed on January 5, triggering the formal case registration.

Doctors say she is bedridden and undergoing treatment. Her statement forms the core basis of the charges, police added.
