BJP Accuses Mamata of Protecting Infiltrators

The Bengal BJP has strongly condemned Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's dharna, calling it a political "theatric." They allege it's aimed at preventing the "cleansing of the electoral roll."

Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattcharya stated the dharna aims to ensure "infiltrators are retained in the electoral roll." He made these remarks during the Parivartan Yatra in Howrah.

Union minister Giriraj Singh echoed these sentiments during the Parivartan Yatra in Midnapore. He claimed Trinamool is working to "legitimise citizenship of Muslim infiltrators from Bangladesh."

Demand for Deeper Electoral Roll Review

Singh believes the Election Commission needs a more thorough review in Bengal. He alleged Banerjee's government provided "infiltrators" with Aadhaar and ration cards.

 

"I think Election Commission needs to go deeper in Bengal. Mamata Banerjee's govt provided them (infiltrators) with Aadhaar cards and ration cards. I think 50 lakh more names should be deleted from the electoral roll," Singh said.

 

Bhattacharya highlighted that Bengal is the only state resisting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. He claims Trinamool knows "it has been rejected by the people."

Concerns over Election Schedule and Constitutional Duties

BJP's Asansol MLA, Agnimitra Paul, raised concerns about the election schedule. She suggested if a new government isn't formed by May 5 midnight, Bengal will come under President's rule.

Former Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta reminded Banerjee of her constitutional duties. He stated the state administration should cooperate with the Election Commission in preparing the electoral roll.

 

"The state administration should cooperate with EC in the preparation of the electoral roll and holding the election. The state govt's non-cooperation... is leading to breakdown of the Constitution. The chief minister forgot her constitutional duties and sat on a dharna against a constitutional body."

 

Union minister Sukanta Majumdar mocked the dharna, suggesting Banerjee is practicing for her role as opposition leader.
