'Batwara 1947', the latest patriotic drama from director Rajkumar Santoshi, has concluded its opening weekend at the domestic box office with Rs 26.50 crore. The film, starring Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, and Shabana Azmi, experienced a sharp decline in collections after an initial boost, struggling to surpass even the opening day earnings of Santoshi's previous release, 'Border 2'.

The film's performance saw a dramatic fall on its third day, Sunday, August 15th. 'Batwara 1947' registered a significant 54% drop, adding only Rs 7.25 crore to its total. This was from an initial release across 7239 screens.

Opening Weekend Performance

The peak of the film's collection came on its second day, Saturday, August 14th, coinciding with Independence Day. On this day, the film garnered Rs 13.50 crore from 8071 screens. This was the only day of the opening weekend that the film managed to score in double digits.

The opening day collection for 'Batwara 1947' was its lowest point, with Rs 5.75 crore. This was from the highest number of daily shows, 8271 screens.

Comparison with Border 2

In stark contrast, 'Border 2', released earlier this year, had a considerably stronger opening. The period war drama, also steeped in patriotism, collected Rs 30 crore on its opening day alone. Furthermore, 'Border 2' maintained strong momentum, even seeing a spike in collections by its first Monday, amassing Rs 59 crore over its extended opening weekend thanks to the Republic Day holiday.

The current opening weekend total of Rs 26.50 crore for 'Batwara 1947' falls significantly short of 'Border 2's' opening day figures, highlighting a challenging start for Santoshi's new venture.
