The intensified action comes as protests and demonstrations continue to erupt across several cities, fuelled by public anger and demands for swift justice.
Court Bars Prime Suspect from Leaving Country
A Dhaka court on Sunday imposed a travel ban on Faisal Karim Masud, whom investigators have identified as the main accused in the fatal shooting. Police officials confirmed that a nationwide lookout notice has also been issued for Masud and other individuals believed to be involved in the attack.
Security agencies say Masud is still believed to be inside Bangladesh but is frequently changing locations to evade arrest. Multiple investigative teams have been deployed, and surveillance has been tightened to track his movements, officials added.
Details of the Attack
Sharif Osman Hadi, 32, succumbed last week to gunshot injuries sustained in what authorities describe as a targeted assassination attempt in Dhaka. Leaders of Inqilab Mancha—also known as the Platform for Revolution—and officials in Singapore confirmed his death on Thursday.
According to police and media reports, the attack occurred on December 12, when two assailants on a motorcycle pulled alongside the battery-powered auto-rickshaw Hadi was travelling in and fired at him, striking him in the head.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors diagnosed severe brain stem damage. As his condition deteriorated, Hadi was flown to Singapore General Hospital on December 15 and admitted to the neurosurgical intensive care unit. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed that he died despite intensive medical intervention.
Political Profile and Public Impact
Hadi rose to national prominence during Bangladesh’s 2024 student-led uprising, emerging as a key organiser and spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha. He was also preparing to contest the Dhaka-8 constituency in Bijoynagar in the next general elections, expected in February 2026.
Known for his outspoken views, Hadi was a vocal critic of India’s role in Bangladesh’s internal political developments, particularly after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India following last year’s unrest. His political stance and growing influence among youth groups had made him a recognisable — and polarising — figure.
