Balrampur: Allegations of Rs 55 Lakh Fraud and Land Grabbing by Close Associates

Shocking Case of Betrayal and Fraud in Balrampur

The Cliff News | Balrampur | October 6, 2026 A shocking case has emerged in Balrampur district where a family has accused their own close associates of defrauding them of Rs 55 lakh by promising a lucrative partnership in a contracting business. They also allege that the associates took advantage of the husband's critical illness to seize 11 bighas of his land.

Exploiting Vulnerability for Financial Gain

Following a serious complaint, a case has been registered against six individuals under various sections of the Indian Penal Code based on a local court's order. The head of the victim family, Jyoti Pandey, stated that her husband, Rahul Pandey, was battling a severe liver disease. She claims that the people the family trusted the most exploited this vulnerable situation to target their hard-earned money and ancestral property.

The Deceptive Partnership and Land Grab

Jyoti Pandey alleges that the associates initially lured Rahul Pandey with promises of profit sharing in the contracting business and even deposited a small sum into their bank account to build trust. Falling for this enticement, they handed over Rs 55 lakh out of the Rs 63 lakh obtained from selling approximately seven bighas of land to the accused, Lakshmikant Mishra, and his accomplices. Jyoti considered Lakshmikant like a brother, which led to a lack of caution in financial dealings.

Deterioration of Health and Deceptive Documentation

The case took a grave turn when Jyoti Pandey accused the defendants of pushing Rahul Pandey into alcoholism. She states that her husband had never consumed alcohol before, but his lifestyle was severely impacted after associating with the accused. Taking advantage of his deteriorating physical and mental state, the accused allegedly prepared documents for one bigha of land on September 14, 2021, and the remaining 10 bighas on October 5, 2021. Jyoti Pandey claims they were misled, being told the documents were related to partnership deeds, when in reality, they were sale agreements for the land.

The Unveiling of the Fraudulent Transaction

The extent of the deception became clear on February 4, 2025, when Jyoti Pandey's husband, Rahul Pandey, returned home after treatment at Maharaja Agrasen Hospital in Delhi. Just four days after his discharge, he was taken to the Sub-Registrar's office, where the sale deed for his 11 bighas of land was executed. According to government regulations, the land was valued at Rs 77.11 lakh, but the sale deed documents mentioned a payment of only Rs 11.44 lakh. Jyoti Pandey claims this amount was later recovered from them, indicating no genuine transaction for the land transfer occurred.

Attempted Land Possession and Fight for Justice

The situation escalated further when the accused attempted to take possession of the land on December 13, 2025. Jyoti Pandey and her family members resisted, resulting in physical assault and mistreatment. Despite filing six complaints at local police stations without effective action, the distressed family sought recourse in the courts. Only after the court's intervention did the police act, registering a First Information Report (FIR) against six accused: Ajit Mishra, Lakshmikant Mishra, Vijay Mishra, Anand Mishra, Dilip Kumar, and Ved Prakash.

Impact on Family and Hope for Justice

This ordeal has completely disrupted the lives of Jyoti Pandey and her three young children. Their education, once at the prestigious Fatima School, is now limited to a government primary school. While the loss of property is a significant blow, Jyoti's greater challenge is securing her children's future and bearing the cost of her husband's expensive medical treatment. The family is anxiously awaiting the ongoing police investigation and the court's verdict, hoping the justice system will help restore their lost dignity and property.

Police Assurances and Future Investigation

Local police officials have assured that given the gravity of the matter, all necessary investigations will be conducted. This includes a detailed analysis of bank transactions, verification of partnership deed authenticity, and a thorough examination of all aspects related to the land documents to bring the truth to light. The police have pledged to provide all possible assistance to the family.
