Speculation grows over Disney’s December strategy as fans anticipate a first look at Marvel’s next mega-event

The Marvel fandom is in overdrive once again, with widespread chatter suggesting that the first teaser for Avengers: Doomsday may debut in cinemas during the screenings of Disney’s Avatar: Fire and Ash on 19 December. While Marvel Studios has not issued any official confirmation, several community trackers and fan-run pages on X (formerly Twitter) have hinted that the footage is ready — and likely to run for slightly more than a minute.

Buzz builds across fan circles

Fan speculation intensified after multiple unofficial Marvel update pages claimed that Disney is preparing to attach the Doomsday teaser to James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequel. These pages, citing internal theatre marketing chatter, stated that the teaser’s duration will be “just over a minute.”

Adding to the frenzy, other users believe the teaser could drop digitally as early as 11 December, when Disney is expected to unveil a new trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash. Some fans have publicly wondered whether characters like Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk or Tatiana Maslany’s She-Hulk will appear in the first look.

Though none of this has been corroborated by the studio, the speculation aligns with Disney’s past strategy of using its blockbuster releases to amplify the visibility of major Marvel titles.

How the speculation started

The current wave of predictions stems largely from an exclusive report by Collider, which mentioned that the first footage from Avengers: Doomsday was planned to premiere with Avatar: Fire and Ash. The platform did not specify whether this would be a full teaser, a short promo, or an early sizzle reel.

Earlier this year, entertainment journalist Alex Perez discussed Marvel’s historical marketing patterns in a Q&A session on Discord. According to him, Marvel typically releases its first teaser about “four-and-a-half to five months” before a film hits theatres.
By that calculation, if Doomsday keeps its December 2026 release date, the teaser would normally arrive around July 2026 — making a December 2024 teaser significantly earlier than expected.

This discrepancy has only fuelled more debate about whether Disney is altering its marketing timelines to rebuild momentum around the MCU after several mixed-performing titles.

A massive multiverse event in the making

Avengers: Doomsday, releasing 18 December 2026, is positioned as one of Marvel’s most ambitious films to date. It will bring together characters from the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Thunderbolts, making it the biggest crossover since Avengers: Endgame.

The project also marks the return of veteran Marvel directors Joe and Anthony Russo, whose work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame reshaped the MCU and set global box-office benchmarks.

Adding to the excitement, Robert Downey Jr. will re-enter the franchise — not as Tony Stark, but as the villain Vincent Van Doom, Marvel’s cinematic version of Doctor Doom. The casting has been widely regarded as a bold, attention-grabbing move intended to re-energise the MCU’s next saga.

Its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, has been rescheduled to 17 December 2027, according to updated listings reported by Variety.

Why this teaser matters

If Marvel does release a teaser in December, it would be its earliest major reveal for any Avengers film to date. For an MCU rebuilding phase, an early promotional push could help:

  • Reignite fan interest after recent box-office fluctuations

  • Boost Disney’s December lineup, pairing Marvel’s hype with the Avatar brand
