Defence, trade, and education set to dominate discussions during first visit of second term

New Delhi, October 12, 2025 — Plans are underway for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to visit India in the coming weeks, marking his first official trip to the country since commencing his second term in May. The visit coincides with the fifth anniversary of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, established in June 2020, and comes at a time when bilateral cooperation has expanded across defence, trade, education, and technology.

Strengthening Defence Ties

Defence engagement between India and Australia has intensified in recent months. Earlier this October, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited Australia, culminating in the signing of three key MoUs covering information sharing, submarine rescue operations, and joint staff talks. Singh also witnessed a live air-to-air refuelling demonstration aboard a RAAF KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker, signaling growing mutual trust in security and operational coordination.

This visit followed Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles’ earlier trip to India. Both sides are now working on a renewed Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation, updating the original 2009 declaration, as well as a Maritime Security Collaboration roadmap to guide defence cooperation over the next decade.

India and Australia have witnessed significant growth in bilateral trade, particularly following the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA) signed in 2022. Trade in goods and services reached approximately US$49.1 billion in 2023, with goods trade totaling US$24.1 billion in FY25 (April 2024–March 2025) — a 14% year-on-year increase in Indian exports.

The upcoming visit is expected to further strengthen economic and commercial ties, with both governments exploring new avenues for investment and market collaboration.
