Australia Names ODI and T20 Squads for India Series, Renshaw Returns, Labuschagne Omitted

Cricket Australia has announced its squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against India, featuring a mix of seasoned internationals and in-form domestic performers.

Key Inclusions and Omissions

Middle-order batsman Matt Renshaw has been recalled to the ODI squad following a prolific run in List A cricket, including a century for Australia A against Sri Lanka in Darwin during the winter. Renshaw, who averages 48.68 in 50-over cricket since November 2021 with six centuries, has been thriving primarily at No. 3 and No. 4, although he has also opened in red-ball cricket.

Conversely, Marnus Labuschagne has been left out after a lean run in ODIs, scoring a top of 47 in his last ten innings. His omission opens up opportunities to push for a Test recall, having recently scored 160 for Queensland against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield.

Allrounder Cooper Connolly retains his ODI spot after impressive performances against South Africa in Mackay and India with Australia A, where he scored two half-centuries in three matches. Young pacer Mitchell Owen may also make his ODI debut after missing the South Africa series due to a concussion.

Fast Bowler and Wicketkeeper Updates

Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns to ODI action after nearly a year out, while fellow pacers Josh Hazlewood and Xavier Bartlett remain part of the lineup. Cameron Green is included in the ODI squad but will skip the T20Is to prepare for the upcoming Ashes series.

Wicketkeeper-batsmen Alex Carey and Josh Inglis feature in both squads, though Carey will miss the first ODI to participate in Sheffield Shield cricket. Nathan Ellis rejoins the T20I squad following the birth of his first child. Sean Abbott retains his T20I spot but is not part of the ODI side.

Star allrounder Glenn Maxwell remains unavailable for the T20Is due to a broken wrist suffered before the New Zealand series. Meanwhile, Matthew Short, who was initially ruled out with a side strain, is included in both squads.

Selectors’ Perspective

Chair of selectors George Bailey explained the strategy behind the squad composition:

“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two T20Is with some player management in mind. While the T20 squad will largely remain intact to build towards the World Cup, we are balancing opportunities to prepare certain individuals for the Test series and Sheffield Shield season.”

Bailey highlighted the importance of nurturing in-form domestic performers while maintaining core internationals for key series.
