Australia Hit by Injury Blow as Glenn Maxwell Ruled Out of T20I Series

Australia’s T20I plans have suffered a setback with Glenn Maxwell ruled out of the series against New Zealand due to a fractured right wrist sustained while bowling in the nets in Mount Maunganui. Maxwell has returned home for specialist treatment and is now doubtful for the five-match home series against India starting October 29. Recovery could see him available for the BBL in mid-December.

Maxwell’s absence adds to Australia’s injury woes, with Cameron Green, Josh Inglis, Pat Cummins, and Nathan Ellis also unavailable. His loss affects both batting and bowling, as he was a key fifth bowler and a dynamic middle-order batter. Matt Short and Marcus Stoinis are set to cover some overs, while the team looks to develop Travis Head’s off-spin options.

Josh Philippe has been called into the T20I squad for the first time since 2023, providing backup for keeper Alex Carey and strengthening batting depth. Philippe impressed on the recent Australia A tour of India but has had limited impact in recent BBL and T20I matches. Australia now faces a challenging period as they aim to settle their best XI ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
