Police hunt for suspects after hundreds of safe deposit boxes are breached during holiday closure in western Germany
German police are investigating a highly sophisticated bank robbery in which thieves drilled their way into an underground vault and looted cash, gold and jewellery estimated to be worth around €30 million, in one of the country’s most dramatic heists in recent years.
The crime took place at a branch of Sparkasse, Germany’s largest network of public savings banks, in the western city of Gelsenkirchen in North Rhine-Westphalia. Authorities believe the robbery occurred during the extended Christmas holiday period, when many businesses were closed and foot traffic was minimal.
How the Heist Unfolded
According to police and bank officials, the perpetrators accessed the bank’s vault room by drilling through from an adjacent parking garage into the underground facility. Investigators say more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes were forcibly opened, representing over 95% of all boxes stored at the branch.
The break-in was only discovered in the early hours of Monday morning after a fire alarm was triggered. Emergency responders arriving at the scene noticed the drilled opening and alerted police, who then uncovered the scale of the theft.
German businesses were closed on Thursday and Friday for Christmas, followed by the weekend, leading investigators to suspect the criminals may have had several uninterrupted days inside the building to methodically break into the boxes.
Stolen Valuables and Estimated Losses
Police estimate the total value of stolen items at approximately €30 million, based on the average insured value of the safe deposit boxes, which officials said exceeded €10,000 each. However, investigators noted that several affected customers have already reported losses significantly higher than their insured limits, suggesting the true financial impact may be even greater.
The stolen items reportedly include large sums of cash, gold bars, and high-value jewellery. Authorities have not released further details on the exact composition of the loot, citing the ongoing investigation.
Suspects Still at Large
Witnesses told police they saw several men carrying large bags through the parking garage stairwell during the night between Saturday and Sunday. Surveillance footage later showed a black Audi RS 6 leaving the garage early Monday morning with masked individuals inside.
Police confirmed that the vehicle’s licence plate had been stolen earlier in the city of Hanover, pointing to advance planning and coordination. As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made, and the suspects remain at large.
A police spokesperson described the robbery as “extremely professional,” telling AFP that it required extensive preparation, technical expertise, and insider-level knowledge of the building’s layout and security systems. The official likened the operation to a cinematic heist, referencing the film Ocean’s Eleven.
Fallout for Customers and Bank Staff
The discovery of the theft sparked anger and distress among customers, with hundreds gathering outside the closed bank branch on Tuesday demanding answers. Police were deployed to manage the crowd after reports of threats against bank employees.
“The situation was tense initially,” a police spokesman said, adding that officers remained on site to ensure safety and that conditions had later calmed.
Sparkasse said the branch remained closed for security reasons and confirmed it had established a customer hotline. The bank also stated that all affected customers would be contacted directly and that it is working closely with insurance providers to assess claims.
“We are deeply shocked by this incident,” said bank spokesperson Frank Krallmann in a statement. “Our priority is supporting our customers and cooperating fully with authorities. We hope those responsible are identified and brought to justice.”
Broader Implications
The heist has raised serious questions about the security of safe deposit facilities, particularly during extended holiday closures. While German banks are known for stringent security standards, the scale and precision of this robbery suggest vulnerabilities that may prompt industry-wide reviews.
For customers, the incident is a stark reminder of the limits of insurance coverage and the risks associated with storing high-value items, even in seemingly secure environments.
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information related to the vehicle, the suspects, or suspicious activity near the bank during the Christmas period to come forward.
