Assam rehabilitation centre launches Northeast’s first hospitality course for persons with disabilities

Guwahati-based Shishu Sarothi has introduced a certified hospitality training programme for persons with disabilities.

• The initiative matters now as inclusive skilling and employment remain limited in the Northeast.

• The course opens new career pathways in hotels and service industries for differently abled youth.

• Young adults with multiple disabilities across Assam and neighbouring states are set to benefit.

A major step toward inclusive skilling has been taken in Assam, where Shishu Sarothi, a well-known rehabilitation and training centre for persons with multiple disabilities, has launched the Northeast’s first structured hospitality training programme designed exclusively for the differently abled.

The initiative, unveiled in Guwahati, aims to bridge the gap between disability support and mainstream employment by preparing candidates for roles in the hospitality and service sector, one of India’s fastest-growing industries.

Programme details and collaboration

The newly introduced certificate course in hospitality training is being offered in collaboration with the Gateway Institute of Hotel Management (GIHM). The programme is designed to train up to 40 candidates per batch, ensuring personalised attention and skill-focused learning.

According to officials at Shishu Sarothi, the curriculum has been adapted to meet the learning needs of individuals with different physical and developmental conditions, while aligning with industry standards.

Who the course is designed for

The programme is open to candidates with a wide range of impairments, including: • Cerebral palsy

• Locomotor disabilities

• Low vision

• Blood disorders such as haemophilia, thalassemia, and sickle cell disease

Training modules focus on basic hospitality operations, workplace behaviour, communication skills, hygiene standards, and practical service training, with an emphasis on confidence-building and independence.
