Arteta hails Arsenal’s “personality and presence” after comeback win over Bournemouth

Mikel Arteta praised Arsenal’s growing “personality and presence” after they came from behind to defeat Bournemouth and move six points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Gabriel Magalhães redeemed an early mistake that allowed Evanilson to give Bournemouth the lead by firing home the equaliser just minutes later. Declan Rice, returning from a knee injury, then scored twice to put Arsenal in control. Although Eli Junior Kroupi pulled one back late on, the hosts held firm to secure their fifth consecutive league victory.

Arteta said the performance reflected how his side have matured after finishing runners-up in the league for the past three seasons, particularly as they avenged two defeats to Bournemouth last term.

“I really loved today the next step of the team in terms of individual personality and presence,” Arteta said. “What Gabi Magalhães did after making a big mistake was remarkable — the way he reacted, the way he played afterwards, and the energy he transmitted to the team.”

The Arsenal manager was equally effusive in his praise of Rice, who had missed Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa after picking up a knee issue against Brighton.

“Every hour was important for Declan just to be available today,” Arteta added. “We didn’t know for how long he could play, but the way he competed, performed and then scored two goals was outstanding. It was a really big message for the team.”

Rice passed a late fitness test and delivered another commanding display.

“He was so disappointed not to play against Villa,” Arteta said. “Until the last minute I asked him how he was feeling, and he said, ‘I’m in.’ He showed again that he’s a big-time player.

“He’s constantly adding things to his game and his role in the team. I don’t see where he can stop — he can still improve in many areas, and he wants to. He’s such a pivotal player for us.”

Bournemouth frustration grows

Bournemouth’s winless Premier League run has now stretched to 11 matches, and manager Andoni Iraola admitted the frustration is mounting.

“It’s a feeling we’ve had a lot lately,” Iraola said. “We do a lot of good things but end up with one point or no points.”

Iraola also insisted that Antoine Semenyo is expected to feature against Tottenham on Wednesday despite speculation over an impending move to Manchester City.

“The situation hasn’t changed,” he said. “Antoine is our player and until I’m told otherwise, he will continue playing.”
