Anil Kapoor reportedly acquires Nayak rights, sequel likely in works

Actor Anil Kapoor’s 2001 political drama Nayak, which attained cult status years after its release, may be heading towards a sequel. According to a Bollywood Hungama report, Kapoor has reportedly acquired the rights to the film, nearly 25 years after its release, and is keen on developing a second instalment.

Originally produced by A.S. Rathnam, the rights to Nayak were later held by producer Deepak Mukut. Citing a source, the report stated that Kapoor has bought the rights from Mukut and plans to retain them as the film holds special significance for him.

“Producer Deepak Mukut of Sanam Teri Kasam fame held the rights to Nayak. It is said that Anil Kapoor has bought the rights from him. He plans to hold the rights as it’s a film close to his heart. Also, he aspires to make a sequel to it,” the source was quoted as saying.

The source further added that Kapoor believes the film’s core idea still resonates strongly with audiences. “He is fully aware of the love he has garnered for the film over the years and believes that the subject of Nayak has tremendous potential for a second part.”

However, no official confirmation regarding Nayak 2 has been made so far.

Directed by Shankar, Nayak tells the story of a common man who becomes the Chief Minister of a state for one day, a concept that struck a chord with audiences over time. The film starred Rani Mukerji, Amrish Puri, Paresh Rawal, Saurabh Shukla, Johnny Lever, Shivaji Satam, and Neena Kulkarni, with Pooja Batra appearing in a cameo and Sushmita Sen making a special appearance in a song.

The film was the Hindi remake of Shankar’s 1999 Tamil blockbuster Mudhalvan.

Speaking to Hindustan Times in 2021 on the film’s 20th anniversary, Anil Kapoor revealed that he was not the first choice for the role.

“I pursued Shankar after Nayak was passed up by both Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh. To this date, I’m glad I did,” he had said.

Reflecting on the film’s lasting impact, Kapoor added, “Honestly, all we knew while making the film was that it would be something special. Something for the ages. I think it’s the subject matter that is just so relevant and relatable. The people, the government and the tensions therein will always remain a topic of great interest.”
