Android 16 May Introduce Real-Time Location Tracking Indicator for Apps

New privacy feature spotted in beta aims to give users clearer control over how and when their location data is used


Google appears to be preparing a significant privacy upgrade for Android users with its upcoming Android 16 release, introducing a clearer and more immediate way to see when apps are accessing location data.

The feature has been spotted in the Android 16 QPR3 beta—with QPR standing for Quarterly Platform Release—and is expected to roll out publicly in early 2026, according to reports based on beta testing of Pixel devices.


How the New Feature Works

In the current beta version, Android displays a small blue dot with a map icon in the system status area near the battery indicator whenever an app is actively using location services. The indicator appears in real time and remains visible for as long as location access is ongoing.

By tapping the dot in the notification shade, users can immediately see which app—or multiple apps—are accessing their location. From there, they are given quick options to:

  • Close the app

  • Adjust location permissions

  • Switch to more restrictive access settings, such as “while using the app”

The design is intended to reduce the friction between awareness and action, allowing users to respond instantly if location access seems unnecessary or intrusive.


Building on Existing Android Privacy Tools

This new indicator expands on Android’s existing privacy dashboard and visual alerts, introduced in earlier versions of the operating system. Since Android 12, users have seen a green dot appear when apps access the camera or microphone.

Under the new system, Android can combine indicators when multiple sensitive permissions are in use. For example, if an app is using both the camera and location simultaneously, the system will display both icons together, offering a consolidated and less cluttered alert.

Privacy experts have long argued that passive permission menus are not enough, and that real-time indicators are more effective at helping users understand how apps behave in everyday use. This update aligns Android more closely with that approach.


Limited Rollout—for Now

At present, the location indicator is only available in the Android 16 QPR3 beta on Pixel devices. Google has not yet officially confirmed when—or if—the feature will roll out to all Android phones.

However, past precedent suggests a wider release is likely. The green camera and microphone indicators also debuted on Pixel devices before being adopted across the broader Android ecosystem.


Why This Matters

Location data is among the most sensitive information collected by smartphones, often revealing daily routines, workplaces, and personal habits. While Android already allows users to manage location permissions, those controls are typically reactive rather than proactive.

By making location access visible at the moment it happens, Android 16 could help users:

  • Spot unnecessary background tracking

  • Identify misbehaving apps more quickly

  • Make more informed decisions about permissions

As regulators worldwide increase scrutiny of data collection practices, features like this also signal Google’s broader effort to position Android as a privacy-conscious platform without sacrificing functionality.


What’s Next

Because the feature is still in beta, its final design and behavior could change before Android 16’s official release. Google has not yet commented publicly on the feature, but its presence in a late-stage platform release suggests it is being seriously considered for general availability.

If rolled out widely, the update would represent a small but meaningful shift toward greater transparency—one that many users may only notice when it helps them catch an app tracking their location when it shouldn’t.
