Aamir Khan's First Impression

Ameesha Patel recently recounted how she landed the role in 'Mangal Pandey: The Rising'. She revealed that Aamir Khan was key to her being cast.

According to Ameesha, Aamir first noticed her intelligence during an interview. They bonded while playing knots and crosses during a camera setup for a joint interview.

"Aamir saw an interview of mine and found me intelligent...So, Aamir and me started playing knots and crosses. We got along very well."

'Lagaan' Casting Twist

Ameesha shared that she was almost cast in 'Lagaan'. She even screen-tested, was selected, and allotted dates. However, she received a call informing her of a change of plans while filming 'Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai' in New Zealand.

Director Ashutosh Gowariker reportedly felt she didn't fit the character's rustic brief because her eyes looked too educated and she was extremely fair-skinned.

From Setback to Success

Ironically, the characteristics that hindered her 'Lagaan' casting became an advantage for 'Gadar: Ek Prem Katha'. Her polished persona helped her secure the role of Sakeena, a sophisticated character.

Ameesha reflected on the near-simultaneous release of 'Lagaan' and 'Gadar'. She imagined being in both films, which ultimately clashed at the box office.

"Imagine, Lagaan and Gadar released together… I would have been in both,"

'Mangal Pandey' Opportunity

Before Ameesha, the role of Jwala in 'Mangal Pandey: The Rising' was initially offered to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Her exit from the project was widely discussed.

Aishwarya clarified that the issue was due to a disagreement between the producer and her team. She stated the producer later apologized for the public handling of the situation.
