End of an Era for Early Kindles

Amazon has announced that several older Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets will no longer be able to access the Kindle Store starting May 20, 2026.

This change affects devices released in 2012 or earlier, marking the end of full support for some of Amazon's oldest hardware.

Impacted Devices and Limitations

The list of impacted models is extensive. It includes devices like the original 2007 Kindle, Kindle DX, Kindle Keyboard, Kindle Touch, and the first-generation Paperwhite.

Early Kindle Fire tablets from 2011 and 2012 are also affected.

Owners of these devices will still be able to read previously downloaded content. Access to purchased books remains available through newer Kindles, the Kindle mobile app, and the web-based platform.

Key Restriction: Device Registration

A critical limitation exists: If an affected device is reset or removed from an account after May 20, 2026, it cannot be re-registered.

This effectively locks the device into its current state, preventing any future setup or account changes.

Amazon's Response and Upgrade Incentives

Amazon plans to notify affected customers before the cutoff date. They will outline the functionality that will remain available.

While book-related features will be restricted, other services and applications on older Kindle Fire devices should continue to function as normal.

To encourage upgrades, Amazon is offering a 20% discount on a new Kindle. They are also offering an eBook credit of around A$30 added to the user's account after purchase.

 

This offer will be available until June 20, 2026.

This change follows earlier efforts by Amazon to extend the lifespan of older devices. In 2016, a software update was required to maintain Kindle Store access.
