Pet-First Travel Takes Off in India

India's travel sector is seeing a surge in pet-first travel planning, with urban pet ownership steadily rising. Air India and Uber are expanding their services to cater to this growing demand.

For many urban consumers, travel plans now hinge on the ability to bring their pets along for the entire journey. This requires seamless mobility, from flights to ground transportation.

Air India's 'Paws on Board' Initiative

Air India is addressing historical challenges in pet travel with its 'Paws on Board' initiative. The airline offers structured pet travel options, including in-cabin and checked baggage carriage, subject to weight limits and documentation.

Air India reports that their pet travel policy enables passengers to travel with their pets with greater ease and comfort across 80+ domestic and international routes. Pets up to 10 kg (including carrier) are allowed in the Economy Class cabin.

The airline has streamlined documentation with a step-by-step guide and online submission. Booking timelines have been reduced from 72 to 48 hours before departure. Passengers also get priority check-in, boarding, and access to a 24/7 helpline.

Uber Pet Expands Across Metros

Uber is addressing the first- and last-mile connectivity gap with its Uber Pet service. Following its launch in Bengaluru, Uber Pet is now available in Delhi and Mumbai.

The service allows riders to book pet-friendly trips on demand or via a Reserve option. Uber acknowledges that pets are increasingly viewed as family members, influencing mobility choices.

"Riders are seeking more reliable and flexible options that allow them to travel comfortably with their pets, whether for daily errands or longer journeys."

Uber Pet supports travel for various animals, including dogs and cats, for vet visits, grooming, and leisure.

Partnerships and Future Growth

Uber is strengthening the pet travel ecosystem through partnerships, such as with Heads Up for Tails (HUFT). This collaboration offers incentives like ride discounts to HUFT locations and in-store benefits for Uber Pet users.

What was once a niche is now a scalable market. Pet parents are willing to pay for inclusive travel services, and the next phase will focus on deeper integration across all touchpoints.

What to Watch Next

Expect further integration across booking, transport, and destination services, creating a cohesive experience for pet-owning travellers. The industry will likely see more partnerships between travel and pet-care companies to cater to this growing segment.
