AI Predicts Melanoma Risk
A new study from the University of Gothenburg reveals that artificial intelligence (AI) can identify individuals at higher risk of developing melanoma within five years.
Researchers used AI to analyze existing healthcare data and pinpoint groups with a significantly elevated risk of this serious skin cancer.

The research team analyzed data from approximately 6 million Swedish adults between 2005 and 2014.
They fed AI models clinical information including medication history and other diagnoses, beyond just age and gender.
"Our study shows that data which is already available within healthcare systems can be used to identify individuals at higher risk of melanoma," said Martin Gillstedt, a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.
Improved Accuracy
The most advanced AI model could distinguish individuals who developed melanoma from those who didn't in about 73% of cases.
This is compared to about 64% when only age and gender were considered.
Combining diagnoses, medication, and sociodemographic data allowed researchers to identify high-risk groups with around a 33% risk of developing melanoma within five years.

The primary cause of melanoma is ultraviolet (UV) light, whether from the sun or sunbeds.
Early detection is crucial because melanoma can spread rapidly to other parts of the body, significantly reducing survival rates.
In 2020, skin melanoma accounted for 4% of all new cancer diagnoses in the EU and 1.3% of all cancer deaths.

"Our analyses suggest that selective screening of small, high-risk groups could lead to both more accurate monitoring and more efficient use of healthcare resources," said lead author Sam Polesie.
