AI vs. Doctors: Glaucoma Detection

A recent study published in the Lancet Primary Care reveals promising results for AI in glaucoma detection. Researchers in Portugal used AI to analyze eye images from 671 people aged 55-65.

The AI tool correctly identified glaucoma in 78% of those who had it. Doctors correctly identified 75%. The technology also ruled out glaucoma in 95% of people without the condition, compared to 91% by doctors.

Reducing Referrals, Improving Efficiency

The AI tool significantly reduced the number of referrals to specialists. It referred 66 people, whereas eye doctors referred 118. Ultimately, 40 patients were diagnosed with glaucoma after referral.

This suggests AI could streamline the screening process. It ensures that only those truly needing specialist care are referred, saving time and resources.

We spoke with Prof Clare O’Donnell, Head of Eye Sciences and Optometry at Optegra. She highlighted key facts about this common eye condition.

 

"Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the nerve at the back of the eye called the optic nerve...this nerve is responsible for transmitting visual information from the eye to the brain,"

explains O'Donnell.

 

Understanding Glaucoma

Glaucoma often affects those aged 50 and over. Undiagnosed, it can lead to vision loss, says the NHS.

There are different types: primary open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, normal tension glaucoma, and secondary glaucoma.

Risk Factors and the 'Silent Thief'

Age and family history are significant risk factors. According to a UCL and Moorfields study, glaucoma affects about 3% of the population over 40 in the UK.

 

"Glaucoma is sometimes called the 'silent thief of sight' because it's often painless,"

says O'Donnell. It initially affects side vision, often unnoticed until significant damage occurs.

 

Symptoms and Treatment Options

Angle-closure glaucoma presents with more dramatic symptoms. Patients may experience eye redness, pain, nausea, and vomiting.

Treatment aims to reduce pressure inside the eye. Options include eye drops, laser therapy, and surgery. Early treatment is crucial for effectiveness.

The Importance of Routine Eye Exams

Regular eye tests are vital for early detection. Optometrists perform screening tests for glaucoma during routine check-ups.

In the UK, routine eye check-ups are advised at least every two years. Your optician will advise on the appropriate schedule based on your individual needs.
