A shocking case from Sataria village in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh district has reignited debate over social media misuse and mob justice. A young man was allegedly forced to wash another man’s feet and drink the same water as punishment for creating an AI-generated meme mocking the latter.
The incident, which took place during a village panchayat on October 10, came to light after a video of the humiliation surfaced online, sparking widespread outrage.
How the Dispute Began
According to officials, the accused youth had used an AI image generator to create a meme featuring Anuj alias Annu Pandey, a local resident previously accused of selling liquor illegally. The meme depicted Pandey wearing a garland made of shoes, which quickly spread across social media platforms in the area.
Pandey and his supporters reportedly took offence to the meme, demanding an apology from the youth. Despite the creator later deleting the post and issuing a public apology, tensions continued to rise.
Panchayat’s ‘Punishment’ Shocks Viewers
To settle the dispute, village elders convened a panchayat to mediate. However, instead of resolving the matter peacefully, the gathering allegedly imposed a degrading punishment: the youth was ordered to wash Pandey’s feet and drink the same water in front of villagers.
Eyewitnesses told police that the act was carried out in full public view, and the recording of the event was later uploaded to social media, where it quickly went viral and drew condemnation for its inhumanity.
Police Register Case Against Six
Following the viral video, Damoh Police took suo motu cognizance of the incident and filed a case against six individuals, including those who organized the panchayat and participated in the humiliation.
A senior police officer confirmed, “A case has been registered under relevant sections for unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation, and violation of human dignity. Further arrests will be made based on evidence.”
