Ahmedabad Emerges as a Sporting Hub
The city’s journey toward hosting the Commonwealth Games began years ago. While the official race for the 2030 event intensified around eight months ago, Ahmedabad’s sports infrastructure and event management expertise have been developing steadily for four to five years.
Key events, including the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and IPL 2023, demonstrated Ahmedabad’s ability to handle international audiences, logistics, and media attention, ultimately giving it an edge over contenders like Nigeria’s capital, Abuja.
In 2022, Ahmedabad co-hosted the National Games along with Gandhinagar and Rajkot, further consolidating its reputation. Most recently, the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships at the Naranpura Sports Complex welcomed over 350 athletes from 29 countries, highlighting the city’s growing international profile.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has taken a hands-on role in India’s Olympic ambitions, personally overseeing the 2036 bid and resolving internal disputes within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) to streamline efforts. In a recent post on X, Shah emphasized India’s growing stature as a global sporting destination, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for creating an ecosystem that nurtures both infrastructure and talent.
PT Usha, President of the IOA, also highlighted the broader significance of the 2030 Games, noting that the event will inspire the next generation, strengthen international partnerships, and contribute to India’s vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
