Zadran's Health Crisis

Former Afghan cricket star Shapoor Zadran, known for his impactful left-arm pace, is currently battling for his life in a New Delhi hospital. He is suffering from Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare and life-threatening immune condition.

The 39-year-old, who represented Afghanistan in 80 international matches, first fell ill in October last year. Initially suspected to be tuberculosis, his condition was later diagnosed as stage four HLH.

Journey to India for Treatment

Due to the severity of his condition, doctors in Kabul recommended treatment in India. His brother, Ghamai Zadran, stated,

"Our doctor in Afghanistan advised us to come to India. Everyone said the treatment here is very good... That’s why we came."

 

Mirwais Ashraf, Chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), and cricketer Rashid Khan, facilitated his travel to India. Zadran arrived in India on January 18 and was immediately admitted to the ICU.

Support from the Cricket Fraternity

Zadran's plight has garnered significant support from the global cricket community. Former captain Asghar Afghan visited him in the hospital for a week to provide assistance.

Raees Ahmadzai, Nawroz Mangal, and Mohammad Nabi have also reached out. Allah Ghazanfar, playing for Mumbai Indians, offered to help shift him to Ambani Hospital.

Despite offers of financial assistance, the Zadran family insists they do not need monetary support. Ghamai Zadran emphasized,

"Alhamdulillah, our family is financially strong. We don’t need money... just prayers."

Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a condition where the immune system attacks healthy tissues and organs. This leads to hyper-inflammation and damage to the bone marrow, liver, and spleen.

While more common in children, it can also affect adults. Zadran is receiving specialized care to manage the disease.
