Adani Expands Footprint in Coastal Maharashtra
In a significant push for India’s maritime infrastructure, the Adani Group has signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Maharashtra government to invest ₹42,500 crore in expanding and modernizing Dighi Port in the state’s coastal Konkan belt. The announcement came on Monday during the opening day of India Maritime Week, where the state government inked 15 major agreements collectively worth ₹56,000 crore.
Confirming the development, a senior government official said that the agreement was signed between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and the Maharashtra Maritime Board. The funds will be used to expand port operations and develop an integrated industrial and logistics ecosystem around the Dighi Port area.
Maharashtra’s Vision: Becoming a Maritime Powerhouse
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who presided over the MoU signing ceremony, said the new investments will accelerate Maharashtra’s goal of becoming “India’s maritime superpower.” He noted that the partnerships span a wide range of sectors — from port expansion and shipbuilding to marine technology, logistics, and water-based transport infrastructure.
“These investments will redefine Maharashtra’s coastal economy,” Fadnavis said, adding that the agreements will create a “seamless maritime ecosystem” connecting the state’s 700-km coastline with global trade routes.
The Union government aims to secure ₹10 lakh crore in total investment commitments during the India Maritime Week, making this one of the country’s largest maritime investment initiatives to date.
Dighi Port’s Transformation Story
The Adani Group, led by Gautam Adani, had acquired the debt-ridden Dighi Port in 2021 by placing a successful bid of ₹705 crore under the insolvency resolution process. At that time, the conglomerate had committed an additional ₹10,000 crore for port expansion and modernization. The new ₹42,500 crore investment significantly scales up those ambitions, signaling the group’s long-term confidence in Maharashtra’s coastal economy.
Dighi Port, located strategically along the Arabian Sea, is expected to become a key node in India’s Sagarmala Project, a national initiative aimed at enhancing port-led industrialization and reducing logistics costs.
Other Major Maritime Investments
Beyond Adani’s announcement, several other companies pledged major investments:
-
JSW Group will invest ₹3,709 crore to expand its facilities at Jaigad Port, enhancing cargo handling capacity and connectivity.
-
Chowgule Group committed ₹5,000 crore towards shipbuilding and offshore rig repairs.
-
Synergy Shipbuilders will invest ₹1,000 crore, while Goa Shipyard Ltd plans to infuse ₹2,000 crore in shipbuilding, repair, and reuse infrastructure.
Officials said the Maharashtra government is also working on launching a ‘water taxi’ service connecting the new Navi Mumbai International Airport — operated by the Adani Group — with Mumbai’s Gateway of India, making it the first airport in the country with such a facility.
A state-of-the-art marina for water transport and recreational boating is also planned in Mumbai, part of efforts to build a “blue economy” hub along the state’s western coastline.
