80th Independence Day Celebrated Globally, Iconic Buildings Lit Up in Tricolour

Global Festivities Mark India's 80th Independence Day

The 80th anniversary of India's Independence was celebrated with grandeur not just within the nation's borders, but also on a global scale. From New York to Dubai, iconic buildings in major cities worldwide were illuminated with the colours of the Indian flag at Indian embassies, high commissions, and consulates.

These events saw a large turnout, including members of the Indian diaspora, local citizens, politicians, and distinguished guests. The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the national flag and singing of the national anthem. Heads of Indian missions in various countries, including ambassadors and high commissioners, read out President Droupadi Murmu's address to the nation on the eve of Independence Day.

This occasion served as a vibrant display of Indian identity and patriotic spirit.

Global Icons Adorned in Tricolour

India's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York celebrated Independence Day with immense fervour, where Permanent Representative P. Harish hoisted the national flag and read the President's address. Similarly, at India's Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva, Permanent Representative Arindam Bagchi, in the presence of approximately 500 Indian expatriates, hoisted the flag and read the President's address.

The mission described it as an inspiring celebration of India's journey, unity, and unwavering spirit. This year's Independence Day was highlighted by the spectacular illumination of renowned structures like the Empire State Building, Grand Central Terminal, Niagara Falls, and Bloomberg's headquarters in New York, bathed in the saffron, white, and green hues of the Indian tricolour.

The Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Cords Bridge in Jerusalem were also illuminated with the tricolour. Similar impressive displays of respect towards India were witnessed on these global symbols in other major cities worldwide. In Moscow, Russia, the Indian diaspora showcased their patriotism with a grand bike rally.

Successful Cultural Diplomacy Display

From a cultural perspective, this global celebration proved to be an effective demonstration of India's 'soft power' and cultural diplomacy. During cultural events organized by various embassies, local artists and children from the Indian community presented captivating performances of traditional Indian dances such as Bharatanatyam, Bhangra, and Kathak.

These events showcased India's rich cultural heritage to the world and served as a bridge between different cultures. On this occasion, expatriate Indians reaffirmed their commitment to their motherland's development, self-reliance, and their continuous contribution towards achieving the goal of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). This underscored the keen awareness and dedication of Indians living abroad towards the nation's progress.
