38th Railway Chess Championship Concludes in West Central Railway; Eastern Railway Crowned Champions

The 38th All India Railway Chess Championship 2026-27, organized by West Central Railway in Jabalpur, has officially concluded with a prize distribution ceremony. The prestigious event showcased exceptional sporting talent while fostering camaraderie and unity among Indian Railways employees.

In the team championship, Eastern Railway emerged victorious, securing the championship title. In the individual category, Grandmaster Das Sayantan clinched the top spot, marking a significant achievement for the event.

Eastern Railway Dominates Team Championship; West Central Railway Organizes Flawless Event

The closing ceremony, held at the Railway Stadium in Jabalpur, was graced by the presence of Shri Dilip Kumar Singh, General Manager of West Central Railway, as the chief guest. He presented the coveted trophy to the winning team, Eastern Railway.

Furthermore, the runners-up, South Eastern Railway, and the third-place team, South Railway, were also honored with medals and certificates by the General Manager. A total of 91 players from 16 railway teams participated in the competition, including 14 Grandmasters and 17 International Masters, demonstrating a very high level of play.

Grandmaster Das Sayantan's Stellar Performance in Individual Category

The winners of the individual competition were also announced during the ceremony. Grandmaster Das Sayantan asserted his dominance by securing first place with an impressive 6 points. International Master Utsab Chatterjee and Grandmaster Visakh N.R. secured second and third place respectively, with 5½ points each, earning widespread admiration for their performances.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Dilip Kumar Singh, General Manager of West Central Railway, extended his heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and participants. He referenced the ancient Indian game 'Chaturanga', stating that chess is not merely a game of moves but also cultivates patience, foresight, discipline, courage, and the ability to make precise decisions at the right time, even in challenging situations.

Shri Singh emphasized that these qualities are crucial not only on the chessboard but also for achieving success and excellence in the railway workplace. He also commended Indian Railways' efforts in promoting sports and providing a platform for players to showcase their talent nationally and internationally. He encouraged West Central Railway's players to excel in future chess competitions and bring pride to Indian Railways and the nation.

Players Applaud Event Arrangements, Wish Success for the Future

The winners of the individual competition highly praised the excellent organization of the championship by West Central Railway. They described the accommodation, food, transportation, and other arrangements as highly systematic and convenient. The players also expressed their wish for West Central Railway to host the next chess competition again.

They extended their best wishes to the West Central Railway chess team for future competitions, expressing confidence that the team will perform better and achieve new milestones in the times to come. Shri Manoj Gurumukhi, President of the West Central Railway Sports Association, congratulated the players in his address, stating that inter-railway competitions provide a common platform for railway personnel from various regions, strengthening mutual camaraderie, sportsmanship, and the unity of the railway family. He thanked all the referees, coaches, players, and the officials and staff involved in the event for their contributions to its success.

Shri Gurumukhi expressed his hope that the players of West Central Railway will reach new heights by performing excellently in the field of chess in the future. Senior officials from headquarters and the Jabalpur division, office bearers of the Sports Association, railway employees, and sports enthusiasts, including Shri Neeraj Kumar (Senior Deputy General Manager), Shri Ashutosh (Principal Chief Engineer), Shri Arvind Kumar Rajak (Principal Chief Commercial Manager), Shri Gyan Prakash Shivnarayan (General Secretary), and Shri J.P. Singh (Secretary to the General Manager), were present in large numbers at this esteemed event.
